Before we talk about Portugal Bugs, let's go back in time to 2016, when at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto , one of the founders, Guilherme Pereira, took his first steps into the world of entomophagy. At the end of his studies, he decided to take on the challenge of developing a product from insect flour. Guilherme Pereira received so much positive feedback that he decided to move forward and found a new startup together with another founder, Sara Martins.
"The truth is that we didn't take the first steps in Portugal Bugs just because the product had excellent feedback. After many lost hours of research and analysis of documents related to this topic, we realized that insects could actually be a great alternative because their nutritional and environmental benefits are very interesting!"
Towards the end of 2016, they headed to the Netherlands to attend one of the first workshops related to the use of insects as human and animal food at Wageningen University. The seminar was so inspiring that in early 2017 they started working in the garage, gradually figuring out how to process edible insects.
The turning point came in 2018, when after winning several business competitions, they were able to fly out of their garage like a butterfly into a more welcoming new space of their own. Naturally, projects came pouring in. First and foremost, they focused on processing mealworms as a sustainable and food-grade product. Not surprisingly, one of the main goals of this likeable Portuguese company is always to impress consumers with new surprises and lead them to be more sustainable in their choices day after day!
